What’s In My Skin Care: Hyaluronic Acid

How Does Hyaluronic Acid Benefit Your Skin?

There are certain ingredients that are scientifically proven to work – ingredients that deliver real results and visible improvement when it comes to skin firmness, elasticity and integrity. One of these skin care heroes is Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Ever wondered about why is it so popular, how it works, and what results to expect from it?

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in your skin (primarily in the connective tissue) and it’s one of the substances that helps skin hold its elasticity and maintains its integrity. Nevertheless, with age, the natural synthesis of hyaluronic acid declines, therefore its levels drop.

In the skin care industry, the most commonly used and effective form of hyaluronic acid, applied to replace the naturally occurring one, is Sodium Hyaluronate. Sodium Hyaluronate has smaller molecular weight (compared to hyaluronic acid) and is especially penetrative.

When used in high concentrations Sodium Hyaluronate is very thick and cannot penetrate the skin barrier, which is why higher concentrations, between 3-5%, are usually used for injections. The industry standard for hyaluronic acid for creams, gels and lotions is up to 2%, because when a product has 2% HA in it (or higher) it tends to ball up on the skin and it doesn’t absorb at all. Thanks to the advances in biochemistry, nowadays it is possible to obtain 100% natural and vegan (synthesized through bacterial fermentation) low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid that can actually pass the epidermis and reach the deeper layers of the dermis, where it can do what it has to do.

Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid

When it comes to having young and healthy-looking skin keeping your cells hydrated is essential. Not just referring to drinking 2 litres of water per day – external hydration matters just as much.

The same rule applies to slowing down the ageing process – to keep wrinkles at bay, you have to make sure your skin gets all the water it needs, and retains it. Just like dehydrated plants lose turgor, when your cells lack water they are not as voluptuous as they normally should be, which can make your skin appear lack lustre and dull. Thanks to its water binding properties, Hyaluronic Acid traps H2O molecules in skin cells! This restores and maintains  fluid levels, preserves skin’s resilience, pliability and fullness and gives it a fresh dewy look.

Another super impressive property of hyaluronic acid is its ability to boosts collagen synthesis by binding to a specific cell receptor (the glycoprotein CD44 to be exact, but let’s not bore you with science). Improving and maintaining collagen synthesis is crucial for preserving skin’s firmness and its youthful look.

In addition, it enhances cell proliferation (i.e cell division) speeding up wound healing and reducing the formation of scars. What can we say, this little miracle-worker is a must-have ingredient in your skin care regimen!
